Dental Check-up

Dental Check-up

Why is attending regular dental check-ups important?

The recommended interval between dental examinations depends on the patient’s oral health, risk factors, age and ongoing treatment needs.

  1. Check for early and existing cavities
  2. Examine the general health of your entire mouth and surrounding soft tissues,
  3. Examine the oral soft tissues for changes that may require monitoring, further investigation or referral.
  4. Oral health forms part of general health. Some oral and systemic conditions share common risk factors, and associations have been reported between periodontal disease and certain systemic conditions. These associations do not mean that one condition necessarily causes the other.

Regular dental care visits are an integral part of maintaining your overall oral health.

Professional cleaning may be recommended where plaque, calculus or staining is present. The need and timing will be determined following assessment.

Some conditions are not visible during a clinical examination alone. Where clinically indicated, dental radiographs may provide additional diagnostic information. Radiographs may provide information that cannot be seen during visual examination and may assist diagnosis and treatment planning. Findings will be discussed with the patient, including whether monitoring, preventive care, further investigation or treatment is appropriate.

We appreciate that some of you may have concerns about your safety. Dental radiographs use low doses of ionising radiation. They are prescribed only when the expected diagnostic benefit justifies the exposure, and appropriate radiation-protection measures are used

The dental team will follow applicable radiation-safety protocols for the equipment and examination being performed;

  1. See what’s going on beneath, between, and under your teeth and gums. Eg. Cavities, Wisdom Teeth,
  2. Detect problems in existing dental work
  3. Tell the dental team if you are or may be pregnant. Necessary dental radiographs can be considered after assessing the clinical need and using appropriate radiation-protection measures. Breastfeeding is not generally a contraindication to dental radiography.
  4. Detect early or existing oral lesions/diseases.
  5.  Confirm dental health status of existing teeth and bone for complex treatment procedures eg, Dental Implants, crown and Bridges.
  6. Document your dental health status, establishing a baseline from which to monitor changes over time.

The appropriate examination and professional-cleaning interval differs between patients. A dentist can advise on a suitable review interval based on your oral health and risk factors.
